How KimiKits Tick All the Boxes

The KimiKit collection is a range of sustainably crafted kits of essential sewing accessories from the PLANETSAVERS range. But what makes them planet savers?

In times gone by, when cloth was valued, reusing, repairing and remaking were long-standing practices to make the most of valuable resources.

Mending Linen – Oil on Canvas, Laura Knight 1900-06. From Art at Te Papa p13.

Clothing was precious and even inherited, clothing items were repaired and remade, then “once the 'life' of the original garment had been exhausted/worn out” (Fraser 2018, p.225), sections of precious fabrics were lovingly salvaged within patchwork quilts. Unfortunately, in today's disposable society, where textile products are sold at ridiculously low prices, most people are unable to comprehend the real value of clothing and cloth.

Textile craft has become the novel pastime of an older generation. In our busy lives we've barely had time to learn the basics, so much so that for many, even replacing a button has become a major issue.

Subsequently having lost the ability to mend an item ourselves, it's often less expensive to replace it, than to seek out someone with the skills to repair it. Our lack of understanding of the value of the time and effort required in making textile and clothing, combined with the now, lost functionality of the button-less item, seems to provide us with few positive options. The item will likely be relegated to the back of the wardrobe, or tossed in the growing corner pile for the charities, or worst still, the household rubbish bin. This scenario is a continued reinforcement of our throwaway culture.

When we reconnect with textile and take the time to sew on that missing button, we start to gain an understanding of the human time and effort involved in making clothes
